Landfill leachate poses a significant threat to the environment. Once the soil is contaminated, it can become saline-alkaline and toxic, harboring harmful pathogens like parasites and disease-causing bacteria that may lead to illness in humans. Moreover, leachate can seep into groundwater, ultimately entering the human food chain and causing severe health risks. Internationally, since the 1980s, the use of 1–2 mm thick HDPE high-density polyethylene geomembranes for landfill liner systems has become a well-established and increasingly popular technology.

1. Fujian Nanping HDPE Geomembrane Selection of Impermeable Materials

Geomembranes are impermeable materials made from one or more polymers, often enhanced with additives such as carbon black and pigments. They have become one of the three key materials widely used in landfill construction over recent years. Among these, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes are the most commonly applied in waste landfills—they are durable, leak-proof barriers produced by extruding or blow-molding high-molecular-weight polyethylene. Key features of HDPE geomembranes include: - **Chemical stability**: Leachate from waste poses no threat to the material. - **Low permeability**: Effectively prevents groundwater and rainwater from seeping through the liner, while also containing methane gas within the system to avoid emissions. - **UV resistance**: The inclusion of carbon black in the geomembrane significantly enhances its ability to withstand ultraviolet radiation, addressing the common issue of degradation when exposed to sunlight.

According to the "Technical Standard for Sanitary Landfill of Municipal Solid Waste" CJJ17-2001, which stipulates that "high-density polyethylene geomembranes should have a thickness of no less than 1.5 mm and exhibit high elongation," the project selected a single-textured Fujian Nanping HDPE geomembrane with a thickness of 1.5 mm, along with HDPE welding rods of the same material as the rolls. Additionally, based on the specific geological conditions of the project, the nature of the landfill materials, the importance of the project, and design requirements, each roll of geomembrane was determined to be 7 meters in length.

Two Fujian Nanping HDPE Geomembrane Construction steps and technical highlights

Based on the project's characteristics, the proposed construction sequence is as follows: blasting, constructing the roadbed for the road within the weathered and unstable rock area on the slope, repairing the drainage ditch, reshaping the slope, and finally laying geotextile on the slope. Fujian Nanping HDPE Geomembrane Leveling the landfill site and constructing a water-retaining dam, followed by laying geotextiles within the landfill area. Fujian Nanping HDPE Geomembrane Final cleanup of the pavement surface within the site. Compared to the construction of other synthetic materials, HDPE geomembrane installation in Nanping, Fujian, is relatively complex. First, all key indicators of the geomembrane—such as density, tensile strength, elongation, and tear resistance—must be rigorously tested. Additionally, a visual inspection of the geomembranes delivered on-site is conducted. Once the visual checks meet the specified standards, representative samples are collected under supervision and sent to the National Building Materials Testing Center for comprehensive analysis. Only after passing these tests can the subsequent steps proceed, including site subgrade preparation, geomembrane joining and welding, trial welds, defect repairs, destructive testing, and finally, backfilling and protective measures.
